The cartridge: durability’s moving target
Ceramic disc cartridges — two lapped aluminum-oxide faces sliding past each other — are the longest-lived valve design in common use and now standard at every price point. What kills them early isn’t wear but debris and scale: grit from plumbing work scores the faces, hard water builds deposits on the seals. Two identical-looking faucets diverge completely the day a cartridge starts weeping a decade in. Brand A publishes a lifetime warranty that names the cartridge, stocks the part, and ships it on a warranty claim — that faucet gets a 30-minute repair. Brand B (typically a marketplace label that has changed names twice since) offers nothing — that faucet becomes landfill over a $15 part. Before buying, run the three-line check:
- Does the warranty name the cartridge and body, for how long, and for whom (original owner? receipt required?)
- Does the brand sell or ship spare cartridges, hoses, and aerators today, for models sold years ago?

Three honest subtractions from the usual listicle math: price beyond the metal-body threshold mostly buys design, not lifespan — a $600 designer faucet and a $150 solid-body faucet often share valve technology. And finish buzzwords: “spot-resist” coatings are about fingerprints, not longevity; if finish lifespan matters to you, ask whether the finish is PVD (physical vapor deposition) — a materially harder process than paint-over-plating.
