A pull-down kitchen faucet lives or dies by its moving parts: the hose, the docking system, and the spray head. The body and cartridge follow the same rules as any faucet — metal waterway, ceramic disc — but a pull-down adds a retractable assembly that cycles hundreds of times a month, and that’s where cheap models quietly cut cost. Here is how each moving part works, how it fails, and what to check before buying.

The spray head material question, honestly

Most spray heads — including on premium faucets — are engineered plastic inside a metal-look shell, and at the head that’s defensible: it’s low-pressure trim, it survives drops better than die-cast zinc, and it keeps the head light enough to dock reliably (the full where-plastic-is-fine map is in our plastic-parts guide). What should still be metal: the faucet body and waterway behind the hose — solid brass or 304 stainless, verified the usual way (wording and weight forensics here). Judge the head by drop survival and nozzle cleanability, the body by metallurgy.

Worked example: the under-sink five-minute inspection

Before blaming a “broken” pull-down, open the cabinet. Trace the hose from spout to valve: is the counterweight resting on the P-trap or a bin of cleaning supplies? (That’s the retraction problem.) Is the hose rubbing the disposal’s sharp edge on every pull? (That’s future abrasion failure — re-route it.) Is the quick-connect damp? (O-ring, a $10 part on a serviceable brand.) Are pull-down faucets reliable?

Modern ones, yes — the format is mature. The reliability gap between models is almost entirely in the hose, docking, and parts availability, not in the concept. Buy the checklist above and the moving parts become maintenance items instead of failures.

Pull-down vs pull-out — which lasts longer?

Mechanically they’re siblings; pull-outs use a shorter hose and lighter head (friendlier to docking), pull-downs give taller clearance and better pot access. Choose by sink depth and backsplash height rather than durability.

Why won’t my spray head dock anymore?

Friction collars wear loose; magnets lose the fight against a stiffened or snagged hose. Check the counterweight’s travel path first (most common), then the docking magnet’s seat for debris. On serviceable faucets both the head and hose are replaceable parts.

Do I lose water pressure with a pull-down?
